The Loukatsaria of Germas
On New Year’s Day, in the village of Germas, you will find yourself at a celebration full of music, laughter, and a traditional vibe. Right after the Divine Liturgy, residents gather in the square and, accompanied by brass instruments, begin a ceremonial march from house to house, sharing their blessings for the new year. You will see housewives offering treats, wine, and tsipouro, children running around and collecting coins, and musicians filling the air with joyful melodies. Everyone takes part in the festivities; young and old, locals and visitors alike. The custom culminates the following day with the reenactment of a satirical wedding, which has always managed to spread gales of laughter. The Loukatsaria is a custom associated with wishes for prosperity, abundance, and good fortune for the year that has just begun. It is also a unique experience that makes you immerse yourself into local tradition.
