If you love wine and seek meaningful wine tourism experiences, Western Macedonia will captivate you. In the land of the renowned Xinomavro, the vine is not just another crop — it is history, tradition, a daily art and craft passed down from generation to generation, enriched with today’s expertise. Across every corner of the Region stretch remarkable vineyard landscapes, carefully tended by passionate winemakers who combine the favorable natural environment with a deeply rooted viticultural culture.
In Amyntaio, Kastoria, Velvento, Siatista, and Kozani, you will discover a rich wine map with places of oenological interest, filled with aromas, flavors, and local tales. Your journey here blends culture, gastronomy, nature, and people who speak about their wine with genuine passion.
The varieties
The dominant grape variety in Western Macedonia —and one of Greece’s most prominent— is Xinomavro. Its multidimensional character gives rise to everything from elegant blanc de noir and refreshing rosé wines to deep reds, dry or sweet, as well as refined sparkling wines. In the region, you will also encounter the local Tsapournakos, a clone of Cabernet Franc, dark in color and intensely aromatic, as well as the indigenous Moschomavro, which is fresh, fragrant, and highly expressive.
Wine-producing zones of Western Macedonia
In Western Macedonia, you will embark on a unique wine journey through Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) zones, which highlight the personality of each area and the contemporary force of local winemaking.
If you find yourself in the plains of Amyntaio, you will instantly sense the uniqueness of the place. Lakes Vegoritida, Petron, Zazari, and Chimaditida shape a special microclimate that gives Xinomavro its freshness, aromatic intensity, and elegance. At an elevation reaching 615 meters —the highest among all PDO zones cultivating this variety— single-varietal red and rosé PDO wines are exclusively produced from Xinomavro. The altitude, the winds, and the sandy soils harmoniously cooperate to create wines with balance, freshness, and aging potential.
Continuing your wine journey, you will discover additional PGI wine-producing zones, each with its own distinct identity. In Kastoria, Lake Orestiada influences the vineyards’ microclimate, gracing local wines with finesse and aromatic richness. In the Velvento wine-growing area, between the Pieria Mountains and Lake Polyfytos, favorable soil and climate conditions create an ideal environment for quality wines in a landscape where nature and cultivation coexist in harmony. In Siatista, with its long winemaking tradition, you will taste the renowned sun-dried wine, known for its concentrated flavor and rich aroma. In Kozani, you will discover wineries and labels that creatively highlight the potential of the local vineyards.
The wine tourism experience
If you visit a winery in Western Macedonia, you will do more than taste exceptional local wines; you will meet people, hear stories, walk through vineyards, and witness the journey from vine to glass. You will participate in tastings, explore aging cellars, and discover how landscape and human craftsmanship work to shape the final result. The unique coexistence of mountainous nature, lakes, a distinctive gastronomic identity, and PDO and PGI wines makes Western Macedonia a comprehensive wine tourism destination of high standards, with a strong cultural character at that. Whether you are an experienced wine aficionado or simply wish to enjoy an authentic travel experience, what you will find here is quality, aesthetics, and substance.
