Grevena Regional Unit

In the embrace of the Pindus Mountains, Grevena —one of the four regional units of Western Macedonia— welcomes visitors to a place where ever-changing landscapes and untamed nature reveal an enchanting scenery, regardless of the season. Majestic mountain ranges, vast forests, winding rivers, lakes, and legendary alpine lakes, together with unique geological formations, create an extraordinary natural setting that calls for exploration. 


Grevena is a destination that harmoniously blends lush mountain vegetation and outdoor recreation with arts and culture. Part of the Northern Pindus National Park, including the renowned Valia Kalda National Forest, stretches across the region. At its core lies the valley of the same name, rich in impressive flora and abundant fauna — a genuine ode to the wild beauty of nature that you need to discover. Around this exceptional environment unfold scenic hiking trails and tranquil excursions, while monasteries and historic churches, local festivals, a geopark rich in geological heritage, encounters with the prehistoric world of mammoths, and the colorful universe of mushrooms are just some of the experiences awaiting you.

Far from the rapid pace of life, time seems to stand still in the picturesque villages and traditional settlements scattered across the mountainsides, forests, and river valleys — from the renowned Vlach villages to the lesser-known Koupatsiochoria. Some lie almost deserted in winter, yet come alive again in summer, welcoming visitors in search of authenticity and serenity. Further south, where Macedonia and Thessaly meet, Deskati completes the landscape of Grevena with its tranquil rhythm and authentic mountain character, offering distinctive and memorable views.

The region’s tradition in livestock farming and cheesemaking remains vibrant within Grevena’s mountainous terrain. Exceptional cheese —including anevato, batzos, feta, kasseri, and manouri— is produced from locally sourced sheep’s and goat’s milk, and you simply must taste it. Grevena is also renowned for its abundance of wild mushrooms, with dozens of varieties collected and used in local cuisine, earning the area the title of Greece’s “capital of mushrooms”.
