The lighting of the fires

Every December, village squares glow with large bonfires lit by locals, reviving an ancient custom with a dual symbolism. On one hand, the fires trace their roots to Roman celebrations of the winter solstice, symbolizing rebirth and light; on the other, they connect to Christian tradition and the fires lit by shepherds to warm the newborn Christ. Accompanied by songs, wine, and local treats, the ritual peaks on December 23. In some villages, however, the fires are lit on different dates throughout the festive season.
