The Lazarines

On “Lazarus Saturday”, the city fills with music, color, and smiles. The Lazarines—young women dressed in traditional costumes—wander through the streets singing and dancing to the sound of brass instruments. After the Divine Liturgy at the Church of Agios Panteleimon, the celebrations culminate in the central square, where greetings are exchanged and the so-called “lazarakia”, small human-shaped breads, are shared. It is a custom of joy, renewal, and collective memory that keeps the spirit of Florina alive.
