The custom of Palia-Poulia
Carnival in Argos Orestiko means something more than mere festivities. It brings flames and mysticism with it. This refers to Palia-Poulia, an impressive tall, thorny cone, which the people of Argos construct with their own hands, only to set on fire on the day of the Carnival. This fiery custom has deep roots in the worship of fire during ancient times, and it relates to the Pleiades constellation (Poulia) and the celebrations for its sake. Today, it continues to enrich the city’s Carnival festivities, creating a magical atmosphere that is well worth experiencing up close.
