Saint Athanasios Mouzakis – The imprint of the 14th century
If you wish to see a characteristic monument of the 14th century, from a particularly turbulent period in Kastoria’s history, head toward the Metropolis district. There, you shall find the Church of Saint Athanasios Mouzakis, built at a turbulent time when the area was no longer under Byzantine control and power passed successively through local rulers. All that until around 1387, when the Mouzakis family of Albanian origin assumed control of the city from the Serbs. The small and austere church—single-aisled, with a semicircular apse and a simple later narthex on the west—features interior wall paintings of the 14th century, in accord with the artistic models of the era.
