Monastery of Saint Athanasios of Zikovisti (Kastanochoria)
This remarkable post-Byzantine monastery with the panoramic views lies 24 km from Argos Orestiko, between the villages of Spilios, Agios Ilias, Damaskinia, and Kerasona. The monumental monastery carries the history of several centuries. Founded in 1629 according to old Ottoman firmans, it housed a school from 1872 to 1885 and served as a refuge during the Macedonian Struggle for Greek guerrilla fighters before being burned by komitadjis on March 18, 1905. Today, only the katholikon survives, adorned with rich frescoes.
