Monastery of Panagia Porfyra

At the southeastern edge of Agios Achilleios, hidden within the island’s stillness, lies the Monastery of Panagia Porfyra, one of Prespa’s most mystifying and moving monuments. The single-aisled katholikon, along with remnants of cells and auxiliary buildings, are the sole parts of the once-flourishing complex to survive to this day, fully restored, with a later addition of a narthex. Frescoes dating back to 1524 in the main church and 1741 in the narthex, painted by the brothers Konstantinos and Athanasios from Korçë, narrate stories from two different eras of faith and art. Visiting the monastery should not be a mere stop on your itinerary—it is a deeply contemplative experience that will linger in memory.
