Livestock Festival in Samarina
One of the region’s important traditional events honouring Saint Mamas, patron Saint of shepherds, is the Livestock Festival in Samarina. It takes place every year in early September at the location Chelimodi, near the chapel of the same name, approximately 10 kilometers away from the village. It is an opportunity to attend an authentic mountainous festival within the natural landscape of the Pindus and experience a tradition deeply rooted in the local community. Residents gather to honor their patron Saint, meet one another and celebrate, while the setting is completed by the distinctive atmosphere of Samarina, the highest village in Greece.
