Lake Ilarionas
In the heart of Western Macedonia, the artificial Lake Ilarionas stretches impressively across the Aliakmonas River valley, creating a striking aquatic landscape that extends from the southeastern edge of the Grevena Regional Unit to the historic area of Aiani in Kozani. Its creation is linked to the Ilarionas Dam, a major infrastructure project that serves hydroelectric power production, water supply for Thessaloniki, and irrigation of the fertile plains of Imathia, Pella, and Thessaloniki — while simultaneously shaping a natural landscape remarkable for its scale and beauty.
