Kyrialeison
In Karpero of Grevena, a special custom is still honoured today: “Kyrialeison”. It begins at dawn on Epiphany, when young male village residents gather at the chapel of the Holy Trinity. They offer a symbolic sum of money, hold religious icons or crosses, and divide into groups. They then walk through the settlement, fields, sheepfolds and springs, diving the icons in the water to bring good harvest and health into the new year. With the cries of “Kyrie Eleison” echoing through the streets, the celebration concludes late in the afternoon with warm soup for all, songs and dances. If you find yourself here on January 6th, you will experience a truly special local celebration.
