Holy Monastery of the Taxiarches of Tsouka

Above Stenopotamos, 1.5 km west of the settlement of Agia Anna, the Monastery of Tsouka tells the vast history of Nestorio in a single stop. Stone-built and perched on the edge of a rock overlooking wild gorges, it stands among the most historically significant monasteries of the area. From the 13th century, when it received donations from the Palaiologos dynasty for its iconography, until the Ottoman period, the monastery served as an important spiritual refuge and a key point of reference for local inhabitants. In March 1943, however, its darkest chapter was written, as German occupation forces set it on fire, destroying most of it. Since 1961, the now-abandoned monastery has been declared a listed historic monument, silently narrating the region’s history to passing travelers.
