Holy Monastery of Saints Anargyroi
In a lush location near the village of Melissotopos, at an altitude of 870 meters and just 24 kilometers east of Kastoria, you will find the Holy Monastery of Saints Anargyroi, a place of deep serenity and historical continuity. It is the most ancient monastery in the area, founded in 1080 AD during the reign of Emperor Alexios I Komnenos. Tradition holds that a miraculous spring of the Virgin Mary already existed on this site and is associated with the emperor’s healing during the Norman invasions.
Originally dedicated to Saint Panteleimon, the monastery entered a period of revival in 1457 when two hieromonks, Cosmas and Damianos, found it abandoned and rebuilt it, dedicating it to Saints Cosmas and Damian (Saints Anargyroi, the Holy Unmercenaries) as well as Saint Panteleimon. Throughout its long history, the monastery experienced both prosperity and hardships, yet its spiritual presence in the region never ceased.
The current katholikon, built in 1857, is an impressive three-aisled timber-roofed basilica. Inside, you will notice the ornate carved wooden iconostasis featuring icons from 1763, along with marble and stone relief decorations that create a harmonious aesthetic. Surrounding the katholikon are the monks’ cells, the guesthouse, auxiliary spaces, the refectory, and the kitchen, illustrating the life of a vibrant monastic community. Of particular interest is the monastery’s cellar, where barrels dating back to the 15th century are preserved — a rare testament to centuries of monastic daily life. Numerous chapels and shrines in the surrounding area enhance the sense of a broader spiritual landscape dedicated to faith, worship, and contemplation.
Today, the Holy Monastery of Saints Anargyroi is one of the most important religious and historical landmarks in Western Macedonia, attracting pilgrims and visitors from around the world thanks to its rich history, architectural grandeur, and profound spiritual heritage.
