Hermitage of Saint Theodore the Tyron in Avles

If you visit the village of Avles, do not miss the Hermitage of Saint Theodore the Tyron, an 11th-century rock-carved place of worship. According to tradition, the saint lived here as an ascetic, leaving the legacy of a Holy Altar carved into the rock. Above the hermitage, you will see two caves with frescoes depicting Christ Pantocrator, the Communion of the Apostles, and the Transfiguration — unique exhibits of Byzantine art. Outside stand the ruins of a church built after the saint’s death, with its western section serving as his tomb. During the feast of Saint Theodore, held on the first Saturday of Lent, you will experience a special celebration: icons displayed along the path, crowds of worshippers from nearby villages, traditional music, dances, and local delicacies create a warm, distinctive atmosphere that invites you to become part of it.
