Hermitage of Panagia Eleousa

At the highest point of a dramatic cave overlooking Lake Megali Prespa stands the Hermitage of Panagia Eleousa. This small, single-aisled, barrel-vaulted chapel is reached via seventy stone steps carved into the rock. On its exterior, it features painted decoration imitating ceramic ornament, while the inside is adorned with frescoes dating to 1409–1410, which are preserved in remarkable condition. On the western gable, the Virgin holding Christ is depicted within a blind arch, while traces of the hermits’ cells around the chapel are also preserved. Its location, breathtaking views, and inner stillness make it one of the lake’s most mystifying spots.
