Episcopal Church of Sisani
Among the most prominent Middle Byzantine churches in Macedonia (11th–12th century), comparable in scale and significance to the Old Metropolitan Church of Veria and the Metropolitan Church of Serres, the Episcopal Church of Sisani is a landmark monument of its time. Originally built as a three-aisled domed basilica, it was rebuilt in the 13th century after an earthquake as a cross-in-square church featuring an impressive marble floor inlay, a bishop’s throne, a pulpit, and wall paintings. Towards the late 14th century, following the Ottoman conquest, the church was abandoned, though its dedication to the Virgin Mary survives in its donor inscription. Today, following conservation work on its masonry and frescoes, the restored monument invites visitors to experience its thousand-year history firsthand.
