Church of Saint Nicholas (“Agia Sotira”) near Platy

Just outside the village of Platy, a modest, single-aisled, timber-roofed church built in 1591 impresses visitors with its majestic interior. Although dedicated to Saint Nicholas, locals know it as Agia Sotira (Transfiguration of the Savior). Three painted zones adorn the interior: full-length depictions of saints and busts across the lower zone; scenes from the Dodekaorton, the Passion of Christ, and the Dormition of the Virgin decorate the upper zones. Τhe arch is dominated by the Virgin Blachernitissa with the Melismos, and hierarchs. Variations in style and technique suggest work from multiple painters, all working within the artistic tradition of the wider Prespa, Kastoria, and Ohrid region—a small yet radiant example of ecclesiastical art concealing greatness beneath simplicity.
