Church of Agios Germanos

At the heart of the village of the same name stands one of Prespa’s most important Byzantine monuments: the Church of Agios Germanos. Built in the early 11th century and dedicated to Patriarch Germanos I of Constantinople, the church is the cross-in-square type with a dome, clearly articulated both in the interior and exterior facades. Three distinct phases of fresco decoration—11th century, 12th–13th century, and 1743 (during the episcopate of Parthenios)—create a most vivid chronicle of faith and art. Highlights include Christ Pantocrator in the dome, the Virgin Deomeni in the arch, and the encircling Dodekaorton, making the church one of the most impressive monuments of Prespa’s long history.
