Basilica of Saint Achilleios
On the islet of Agios Achilleios in Lake Mikri Prespa, amid stones etched with centuries of history, stand the ruins of one of Greece’s most iconic Byzantine basilicas. Built by Tsar Samuel between 986 and 990 AD to house the relics of Saint Achilleios, the three-aisled, timber-roofed basilica still impresses with its large scale and architectural presence. The stepped synthronon in the arch is yet another testament to its episcopal status, while a box-shaped tomb preserved in the diaconicon is attributed to the patron saint himself. Surviving fragments of frescoes from the 11th and 12th centuries reflect successive renovations and eras. Reaching the site via the pedestrian bridge that crosses the lake is an experience in itself—one that feels like stepping into the past, where nature embraces history.
