Ascension Festival in Akrini
Every year, 40 days after Easter, Akrini comes alive with its grand Ascension Festival, a three-day celebration lasting from Tuesday to Thursday. At the heart of the festivities is the Holy Church of Saint George, where the Divine Liturgy and Vespers attract numerous faithful from all across Western Macedonia and beyond. The most impressive moment of the festivities is the procession of the icon of Saint George: a ceremonial parade with horses and devotees that connects you with a deeply rooted, everlasting tradition. Throughout the three days, you can also explore the large trade fair featuring products of all sorts and a nostalgic festive atmosphere. As part of the celebrations, the children’s dance group performs traditional dances in front of the church, adding color and vitality to the event. Live music and dancing for people of all ages complete the joyful atmosphere, while the famous Egg Battles —one of the region’s most recognizable customs— take place at the Μulticenter, drawing massive crowds.
