Argoutsaria of Kleisoura
On New Year’s Day, the most primal expression of Kleisoura can be encountered: the Argoutsaria, a ritual that combines heroic elements with ancient Dionysian ceremonials. Men of the community disguise themselves with animal masks and costumes, dancing through the streets, and stirring the village to life. Gkegas, Kokona, Tserkezos, along with the group of the Argoutsaria, take center stage in a theatrical performance full of passion and humor, which culminates in the square with crossed bayonets, paired dances, and wishes for a happy new year. The celebration continues in cafés and homes, featuring tsipouro, songs, and local delicacies.
