Archaeological Site of Diocletianopolis

A short distance from the Archaeological Museum of Argos Orestiko, near present-day Armenochori, lies the open archaeological site of Diocletianopolis—an unusual fortified city that was probably founded by the Roman emperor Diocletian (284–305 AD). As you take a pleasant walk through the site, the history of a place of immense strategic importance vividly comes alive. Its times of prosperity are being reflected in the impressive fortification walls, extending for 2,700 meters around it. Significant parts of the fortifications have been restored, while the ruins belonging to both religious and secular buildings from the 4th and 5th centuries complete the image of the Roman city, which was partly abandoned in the wake of the barbarian invasions.
