Kastoria Regional Unit

At the western edge of Macedonia lies the Regional Unit of Kastoria, a place that beautifully blends the magic of nature with a rich historical legacy and a vibrant cultural life. Amphitheatrically built around its lake, the city of Kastoria welcomes you as one of the most significant beacons of Byzantine heritage in Greece. Dozens of Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches, adorned with rare frescoes, narrate the city’s long journey through history. The imposing manor houses —especially in the historic Doltso and Apozari neighborhoods— bear witness to the economic and intellectual prosperity of earlier times, shaping an urban landscape of exceptional architectural value. Thanks to the fur industry, which defined the city’s economic and social identity for generations, Kastoria became historically connected to international markets.

Further north and west, Mount Grammos and the area of Nestorio reveal one of the rawest, most authentic mountainous landscapes in Greece. Dense forests, alpine meadows, rivers, and remote villages create an ideal destination for nature enthusiasts and explorers, while the alpine lakes of Grammos —Moutsalia and Gkistova— complete a most dramatic scenery. In Argos Orestiko, nature and tradition are woven into everyday life. The forested Ondria hills and the Aliakmon River, which rises in Grammos and flows through the region, offer wonderful routes to walk and immerse yourself in the natural surroundings, while the thermal springs of Ammoudara provide valuable moments of relaxation and rejuvenation.

Kastoria also stands out for its rich agri-food heritage. Renowned products such as beans and apples are complemented by exceptional dairy goods —feta, kasseri, kefalotyri, and kefalograviera— all of them are integral parts of the region’s distinctive culinary identity.
