Tsiri Varvara – Amyntaio
Every year on December 3rd, Amyntaio’s neighborhoods is illuminated by dozens of large bonfires. This is the so-called Tsiri Varvara, one of the most striking Macedonian customs, where flames become a symbol of joy and blessing. Should you find yourself here at this time, you will see locals stacking wood into towering pyramids, setting them alight, and as the flames rise, filling the air with the traditional chant: “Tsiri-tsiri Varvara!”. A feast unfolds around the fire—warm bean soup, wine, tsipouro, and the sound of brass instruments that carry on until morning. According to tradition, the flames drive evil spirits away, bringing good fortune for the year ahead. Today, they also create a rare and powerful sense of community.
