Tranos Dance

In Vlasti, both the Feast of the Assumption (August 15th) and the Feast of Saint Panteleimon are marked by the Tranos Dance, one of the region’s most significant cultural happenings. Residents and expatriates form a large structured circle in the meadows of Vlasti of immense sentimental value. Without musical instruments—relying solely on their voices—the participants curate a solemn performance that combines a capella singing and dancing. They form two groups depending on their age, one of which sings traditional songs, while the other sings back each lyric in a slow yet powerful dance. Tranos Choros is an immense display of collective cultural identity, as well as an ode to history. Its value has officially been recognized in 2018, when it was inducted into Greece’s National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
