Kladaries (December 23th)

Just before Christmas, Voio in its entirety lights up with dozens of large bonfires ignited simultaneously in the squares of every village — these are the famous Kladaries. From Siatista to Galatini and Sisani, young and old gather around the flames, singing, dancing, and ringing bells in a night filled with light and warmth. Preparations begin weeks in advance, with children collecting dry grass and wood for the fires, which, according to the ceremony, are built around a tall central pole known as the vergi. At the signal to light them, the flames rise high and the village squares transform into festive gathering places. An ancient custom symbolizing hope and rebirth, Kladaries keep the spirit of Christmas alive. The tradition is revived in Siatista, Aliakmonas, Vouchorina, Rodochori, Kaloneri, Zoni, Molocha, Sisani, Neapoli, and Galatini.
