Fanoi
In many villages of Grevena —from Megaro and Agios Georgios to Pontini and Katakali— the traditional custom of the Fanos is revived on Carnival Sunday. The locals gather large piles of branches in the central squares, set them alight and let the bonfires burn throughout the night, while they drink, dance and sing songs, often bawdy or satirical around them — elements that reveal the Dionysian character of the custom. The celebration continues until the early morning hours, bringing together the entire village, as well as visitors. It is worth seeking out a Fanos if you find yourself in Grevena during the Clean Monday long weekend.
