The Easter “Perdikes”

In Grevena, traditional Easter eggs are not simply dyed red; they are small works of folk art, known as “Perdikes”. To make them, a special technique is used, with beeswax as the main material. Before being dyed, the eggs are hand-painted with melted wax using a stylus. As you look at the designs that are “embroidered” onto the eggs, you notice motifs inspired by nature, pastoral life, delicate geometric shapes, and even blessings and names. After being “embroidered” with wax, the eggs are dyed red. The dye does not penetrate the wax, and when the latter is removed, the painted designs remain white against the red background. The result is unique each time — small Easter creations that carry tradition and care.
