Early Christian Basilica of Saint Paraskevi
In Agia Paraskevi of Kozani, you will encounter the ruins of an important monument from the Early Christian period of the 6th century AD: the Early Christian Basilica of Saint Paraskevi. An interesting local tradition is associated with the discovery of the church ruins, as legend says that a villager repeatedly saw Saint Paraskevi in his dreams, urging him to search for the icon dedicated to her. When he finally shared the vision with his wife and fellow villagers, they all decided to help fulfill the Saint’s wish. Thus, the excavations began and, while digging, they discovered the icon alongside a significant Early Christian basilica. The floor of the basilica is truly impressive, preserving rare mosaics featuring vegetal and animal motifs, fish, fishermen, and geometric designs that reveal the artistic craftsmanship of the era. Around the church, three annexes were identified, one of which functioned as a baptistery and featured a built baptismal font.
Next to the Early Christian basilica, you will see the newer church built to serve the residents, while beneath it lies the crypt of Saint Paraskevi. A stop here is certainly worthwhile, as it combines tradition, history, and an important monument of the Early Christian years.
