Holy Church of Saint Nicholas and the Bell Tower of Kozani

The Holy Church of Saint Nicholas is the landmark monument of Kozani. Built in 1664 following the initiative of the notable Charisios Trantas, it has been established as the city’s cathedral, a living symbol of faith, culture, and history. Its architecture will impress you, as will the 18th-century carved wooden iconostasis, the pulpit, and the intricate bishop’s throne. The frescoes created in 1730 by the Ioannina iconographers Nikolaos and Theodoros are outstanding exhibits of Orthodox art. Equally remarkable are the portable icons of the church, such as those of Panagia Portaitissa and Saint Nicholas.
Next to the church, as an integral part of Nikis Square, stands the iconic “Clock” of Kozani — the well-known bell tower of Saint Nicholas with its clock faces at the top. It was built in 1855 thanks to donations from affluent residents and it soon became a symbol of the city’s Greek identity against Ottoman rule. Its present form, with seven floors, was shaped in 1939, when the benefactor Konstantinos Mamatsios donated the clock mechanism. Since then, its familiar chime has marked not only the passing of time, but also Kozani’s enduring presence through the years. Together, the Church of Saint Nicholas and the Clock create one of the most beautiful images of the city.
