Paleontological Collection of Siatista
The historic Trampantzeio High School houses one of Greece’s most significant paleontological collections. Fossils of mammoths, rhinoceroses, rocks, and minerals reveal the geological memory of the region. Its most iconic exhibit is the skull of a prehistoric elephant with intact tusks, approximately 125,000 years old, discovered in 2006 in Kaloneri. Since the first tusk finding circa 1902 in the Aliakmon Valley to today, the collection has grown to include mammoth bones, rhinoceros jaws, and fossils of horses, deer, and bovines. The finds span an impressive time range—from 75,000 to 400,000 years—making your visit a journey deep into prehistoric time and the natural history of the area.
