Church of Agios Dimitrios in Siatista

In the Chora neighborhood of Siatista, stop at the Church of Agios Dimitrios, the central parish church and a living chronicle of the town. The original church, built in 1647, was replaced in 1801 by a larger building featuring a carved wooden iconostasis and rich frescoes. That second church went on to be destroyed in the fire of 1910. The present church, built in 1911 on the same site, follows a Byzantine architectural style and was designed by the Siatistan architect Aristotelis Zachos. It was officially inaugurated in 1928. Right beside it stands the six-sided bell tower of 1856—twin to the one in Gerania—serving as a landmark of memory within the urban fabric. In 2012, the visit of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew reaffirmed the church’s role as a spiritual center of Siatista.
