Holy Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos at Spilaio

At the entrance to the village of Spilaio stands the Holy Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos, a peaceful and historic pilgrimage site founded in 1633 under Archbishop Gavriil of Milia, Metsovo. The katholikon follows the Athonite model, characterised by simple yet imposing architecture. Inside, wall paintings dating to the time of its foundation testify to the monastery’s artistic and spiritual significance during its flourishing years. The masonry consists of rubble stone with internal timber reinforcements — a technique that ensured structural resilience without altering the external appearance. The monastery was dissolved in 1930, and its relics were transferred to the Monastery of Zavorda. However, its memory remains, as legend says that Saint Kosmas of Aetolia passed through twice and established a “secret school” here, granting the site a distinguished place in the religious history of Grevena.
