Aziz Aga Bridge near Trikomo

Over the Venetikos River stands the most imposing of Grevena’s stone bridges: the three-arched Aziz Aga Bridge. As you approach it, its scale and strength are immediately apparent. Measuring 75 meters long, 3 meters wide, and rising to 15 meters high, it resembles a massive stone giant uniting the two banks with an almost natural-like stability. Its central, slightly elliptical arch—spanning 28 meters—is the largest in Macedonia and among the largest in Greece. Built in 1727 by Aziz Aga along the important commercial and military road connecting Grevena with Epirus, for centuries it served as a crossing for people, livestock, and goods. Constructed of semi-dressed limestone blocks, it features details such as triangular cutwaters to deflect rushing waters and small arched openings above them to allow floodwaters to pass. Inside the main arch once hung a bell—called a kypri—to warn travelers of strong winds. Walking across its steep cobbled deck, you feel as though you are stepping straight into the region’s history.
