Church of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary
If you find yourself in Vasileiada, it is well worth standing before the Church of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary, a site of great historical and religious significance. It is a three-aisled basilica of impressive dimensions (24×14 m), built in 1861 on the foundations of an earlier church, as evidenced by the carved marble inscription on the southern side of the building — a silent testament to the site’s enduring sacred presence. The church has three dedications: the left aisle is dedicated to Saint Nicholas and the right to Saint John the Theologian, reflecting its distinctive liturgical and symbolic character. Inside, you will discover valuable icons created by painters from the village of Chionades in Epirus. These icons predate the current structure and are exceptional examples of post-Byzantine art, offering a glimpse into a remarkable iconographic tradition. Its distinctive architecture, combined with its historical depth and artistic heritage, makes the church a place of worship and culture of special importance to the wider area. To this day, it remains a vibrant spiritual center of Vasileiada, linking the community’s religious life with the preservation of its local cultural memory and heritage.
