Saint Nicholas of Kasnitzis – A 12th-century artistic gem

One of the finest examples of Byzantine art in Kastoria can be found at Omonia Square: the Church of Saint Nicholas of Kasnitzis. Built in the 12th century, this modest single-aisled basilica with a narthex stands out for its ceramic decoration, architectural grace, and outstanding wall art, created as a unified painting. Observing them, you will surely realize just how important a center of arts and culture Kastoria once was within Macedonia. In the apse of the sanctuary dominates the Virgin Platytera of the Heavens, while the walls depict scenes from the life of Christ and Saint Nicholas. Look more closely at the eastern wall and you will notice a particularly interesting representation: the founder, Nikephoros Kasnitzis, and his wife offering a model of the church to the patron saint.
