The oldest oak tree in Europe

A rare natural monument, an approximately 1,305-year old oak tree, awaits you at Melovo, a few kilometres outside Deskati. It is the oldest oak in Europe, a pedunculate oak (Quercus pedunculiflora), which, according to dendrochronology, has been rooted in the same spot since 720 AD. The tree impresses not only with its age, but also with its awe-inspiring dimensions: a trunk diameter of 2.25 meters, a circumference of 7.06 meters and a height exceeding 23 meters. Due to its unique scientific, ecological and historical value, it has been designated a “preserved monument of nature”.
