Holy Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos of Tornikiou

Built on a low embankment near the bank of the Aliakmonas River, the Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos of Tornikiou invites you to discover a unique piece of the Byzantine heritage of Western Macedonia. The Monastery is named after the historic Tornikios family — a Byzantine family from Asia Minor who likely owned land in the area. The current location of its katholikon is the result of an impressive full relocation, 127 metres away and 27 metres higher than its original position, onto a hill with a 25% slope. This demanding operation to relocate and preserve the monument was carried out in 2011, as part of the construction of a hydroelectric dam. It is a two-storey, tiled-roof katholikon —unique in Western Macedonia— consisting of two small single-nave churches with independent entrances on one side, each ending in a semicircular apse on the other. On the upper floor, a low wooden iconostasis separates the sanctuary from the main church, whose remarkable frescoes were curated by an early Kastorian workshop, dating to 1481. The ground-floor church, with the same dimensions and layout, was decorated in 1728–30 by Panos of Dimitrios, a priest from Ioannina. The surrounding area was landscaped with materials from the Monastery’s original site, preserving its timeless atmosphere.
