Church of Saint Nicholas near Pyli

On the western shore of Lake Mikri Prespa, near the village of Pyli, stands the Church of Saint Nicholas, one of the region’s most intriguing monuments. Dating to the 14th century, the church is a triconch, cross-in-square structure distinguished by its rich ceramic decoration on the facades. Until the mid-20th century, much of its superstructure and dome were intact, before the latter collapsed, quite possibly during the Italian occupation. Inside, fragments of frescoes—military saints and part of an angel—dating to after the mid-14th century survive. Though incomplete, the church remains profoundly evocative within its serene landscape.
