Holy Monastery of Agios Markos, Proti
Hidden in the Varnountas mountain range, at an altitude of 959 meters and just ten minutes from Florina, the Holy Monastery of Agios Markos was founded in 1864 by the Metropolitan Bishop Meletios of Moglena. During the Macedonian Struggle it served as a refuge for chieftains such as Pavlos Melas and Lakis Pyrzas, while the conflicts of the 20th century led to its decline. In the mid-2000s, the monastery was fully restored by Metropolitan Bishop Theoklitos, obtaining a new wing, a restored katholikon, and the Chapel of Saint Catherine. Today, it functions as a cenobitic monastery, offering visitors tranquility, historical memory, and breathtaking views of the lush slopes of Varnountas.
