Church of Agios Georgios, Florina

Built in 1835 just outside the city, on the Florina–Kastoria provincial road, the Church of Agios Georgios is a major religious and historical monument of Florina. It is a three-aisled basilica with a wooden roof, featuring a beautiful carved wooden iconostasis and old portable icons. This is the church where the first official Orthodox thanksgiving service for the city’s liberation was held, back in 1912. Should you find yourself in Florina on November 8, it is worth attending the service that keeps the tradition of the liberation celebrations alive.
