Nikeios School – Nymfaio
One of the most imposing buildings in Nymfaio, the Nikeios School rises above the village like a beacon of knowledge and memory. The three-story stone school, with its tower and clock, was built in 1928 thanks to a donation by Ioannis Zan Nikos, a native of Nymfaio who brought the architectural plans from Sweden, blending Macedonian stone with Scandinavian simplicity. Generations of students passed through its classrooms: the building housed the Lower Secondary School until 1941 and the Primary School until 1980. When Nymfaio’s population began to decline, the school fell silent—until 1986, when a group of residents decided to revive the village, starting with the Nikeios School. In collaboration with the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the building was restored and operated as a model conference center before assuming a new, significant role. Since 1993, it has hosted the ARCTUROS Information Center, an initiative by Yiannis Boutaris, where visitors can learn everything about the brown bear, now a protected species inhabiting the region’s mountains.
