Lake Vegoritida
Lake Vegoritida stretches serene and imposing, surrounded by the massive mountains of Askio, Vermio, and Voras. It is Greece’s third-deepest lake and the largest and it is considered to be the deepest remnant of the ancient Lake Eordaia, once exceeding 250 meters in depth. Located at the lowest point of the Zazari–Chimaditida–Petron lake complex, it receives their waters, forming a valuable ecosystem. Over 160 species of wild birds nest in the area, creating a unique setting that is ideal for wildlife observation and photography. Dalmatian pelicans, great white pelicans, golden eagles, sea eagles, and falcons are just a few of the impressive species found here. With its unparalleled beauty and tranquility, Vegoritida is an ideal destination for cycling and hiking, attracting nature lovers year-round.
The myth behind the lake
Legend has it that Vegoritida was formed accidentally when a girl accidentally sealed the opening of a well. The waters flooded the village and surrounding plain, forming the great lake that would become known through the centuries. Archaeological excavations along its shores confirm settlements dating back thousands of years ago. Although findings are limited, they remain significant, indicating that Vegoritida existed from early antiquity, likely since the Bronze Age.
