Lake Petron
Lake Petron lies within a basin formed by Mount Triklario, Varnountas, Vernon, and Voras, about 3 kilometers west of Lake Vegoritida. Almost circular in shape and mesotrophic in character, it is a key link in a broader hydrological chain, receiving the influx of Lake Chimaditida and emptying into Lake Vegoritida, forming a dynamic interconnected aquatic system. Along its shores, nature meets time: the Hellenistic city of Petron and historic place names narrate the region’s centuries-long history, while dense reeds and minimal human disturbance create the ideal haven for rich birdlife. One of Greece’s three largest breeding colonies of pygmy cormorants is hosted here, offering unique experiences for nature aficionados and birdwatchers.
