Lake Kastoria

Lake Kastoria, also known as Orestiada, surrounds the city of the same name and is the seventh-largest natural lake in Greece. It is considered one of the most ancient lakes in Europe, as human presence in the area dates back to the Neolithic period, evidenced by findings at the prehistoric lakeside settlement of Dispilio. Reed beds and a limited space of wet meadows extend around it, while a lakeside forest develops along its northwestern shore. The lake hosts a great variety of waterbirds and fish, serving as an important breeding habitat for many species, as well as a feeding ground for the two pelican species that nest in nearby Mikri Prespa. A distinctive feature of the area is the birds’ familiarity with human presence, the result of ongoing activity along the lakeshore, allowing close observation. This vibrant relationship with nature makes the lake ideal for rowing and activities such as canoeing, kayaking, and water skiing, offering visitors and residents the opportunity to enjoy the landscape while experiencing unique water activities.
