Grevena–Kozani Geopark

If geology fascinates you and you wish to understand how the land beneath your feet was formed, the Grevena–Kozani Geopark —part of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network since 2021— is the destination that will answer every question and help you interpret the wonders you see around you. Covering an area of approximately 2,500 km², you will encounter the oldest dated rocks in Greece, estimated to be around one billion years old. It is also the site where the world’s largest tusks (measuring 5.02 meters) were discovered in Milia, Grevena — a finding of global scientific importance. This is a place where the tectonic plates of Europe and Africa once converged. The imprint of this geological history is evident in its dramatic terrain: imposing gorges, unique formations, and dramatic landscapes of striking beauty. Highlights include the Mesio Nero Valley on Mount Vourinos, the Portitsa Gorge, and the Boucharia and Nochtaria — the enigmatic geological formations often referred to as the “Little Cappadocia of Kozani”. Throughout the year, the geopark hosts activities, guided field visits, and experiential programs, making it an ideal destination for exploration, education, and engagement with the region’s geological heritage.
